PITB and ITU collaborating to digitize historical archives

Pakistan Information Technology Board (PITB) and Information Technology University Punjab (ITU) are collaborating in order to digitize the historical archives to provide historical treasure to the world’s academia and historians for research.

PITB and ITU are collaborating with Punjab Archives and Libraries department as well as Columbia University’s Group for Experimental Methods in Humanities. The purpose of this digitization is to bring Pakistan’s historical knowledge, Archives and Architectures to the world on the tip of the finger, the Chairman PITB, Dr. Umar Saif informed seminar gathering on Monday.

PITB launches E-libraries in 20 districts of Punjab

He further said, “We are now opening out centuries-old archives to the world, earlier these archives had limited access and were saved in traditional manner, now the technology asks us to do more and save them in more contemporary way, we are taking this initiative with the use of technology and recommendations of participating experts and analysts.

Additional Chief Secretary, Punjab said, digitization of archives would bring the knowledge to the government’s radar for research and development. When this project completes it would allow access to precious historical material from Raja Ranjeet Singh Era to date, it would provide chronical knowledge about the evolution in the region, it would be available to all. The archives would also include undisclosed documents such as; manifesto, death sentence order of Bhagat Singh, scheduled to be displayed on Pakistan Day, March 23 at the tomb of Anarkali.

Secretary Punjab archives and libraries Tahir Yousaf said digitizing documents, archives and historical material would also preserve them for ages to come and it would also be easily accessible to all.
