PlayStation 6 release “imminent”, console will be “cheap”

The development of the next generation of consoles at Sony is apparently progressing faster than expected. Current leaks suggest that the upcoming PlayStation 6 will not only be released in 2027, but will also be significantly cheaper than some expected.

Focus on new hardware

Sony is working on the next generation of consoles. After it was said in both January and February that the PlayStation 6 might not appear until 2029, current evidence once again suggests that the Japanese company’s next console could come onto the market much earlier. How Moore’s Law Is Dead on YouTube reported that all current developments at Sony show that a release is not years away but rather “imminent”. The focus would also be on high cost efficiency, which should reduce the price.

The PlayStation 6 is expected to be even cheaper when it is launched than the current PS5 Pro, which has just had a price increase and currently costs 900 euros. Sony plans to design the new hardware in such a way that production costs remain permanently low, for example through cheaper cooling systems and power supplies. The leaker is currently advising budget-conscious players not to buy a Pro model.

Planned handheld with native performance

In addition to the classic home console, the future ecosystem apparently also includes a standalone handheld. However, the mobile device not only functions as a streaming screen like the current PlayStation Portal, but also calculates games natively. According to the rumors, four Zen 6c cores and two energy-saving processor cores are used. A special power saving mode serves as the technical basis for seamlessly adapting refresh rates to the hardware. One advantage of the planned handheld is its direct backwards compatibility. Users should be able to play titles from the past and future generations without having to rely on a constant internet connection. However, developers would have to optimize their games for more hardware profiles in the future, which would likely increase software production costs.

Sony is silent

It remains to be seen whether Sony can maintain its alleged 2027 schedule and low hardware prices given the global economic situation. So far, the company has not commented on any speculation surrounding the PlayStation 6. However, current developments show that the transition to the next console era is already being actively prepared in the background and with great strides being made.
