Playstation VR 2: Evidence of an imminent launch is increasing

Sony has delivered a real bestseller with Playstation VR, the successor should offer clear advantages in combination with PlayStation 5. After a long period of silence around Playstation VR 2, there are now indications that a start could be pending soon.

Oculus and Valve had revived the PC market for virtual reality headsets, also known as head-mounted displays, or HMD for short. Sony took this as an opportunity to pull out of the drawer its plans for its own PlayStation VR headset, which had long been secretly developed. Sony took its time with an official announcement until February 2021 and so far has only provided a look at the new controllers. As Brad Lynch, VR developer and hardware specialist wrote on Twitter, the Chinese manufacturer Goertek will take over the mass production of “PS VR 2”. The start of production should, therefore “soon” be expected, according to his prediction, citing “a respected Chinese analyst from the supply chain” – a presentation at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2022 at the end of March would be conceivable. The company has previously specialized in the production of acoustic components but now seems to be realizing VR products for more and more customers.

Lynch provides even more interesting information with regard to Goertek. In addition to Sony’s new VR headset, the company could also be a contract manufacturer for Project Cambria of the Meta group.
