Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk is the first to raise the voice against the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in making autonomous weapons known as “Killer Robots”.
Elon Musk has called upon other tech giants and United Nations to pass a resolution which could ban the use of AI in Autonomous Weapons, hundreds of tech companies senior executives supported the cause and urged UN to seriously evaluate the potential dangers of the technology.
According to AFP, the letter written to UN by the tech giants is inked with 116 signatures from their executives including Elon Musk the CEO of Tesla and Mustafa Suleman, co-founder Google’s DeepMind.
“Lethal autonomous weapons threaten to become the third revolution in warfare, once developed they will permit an armed conflict to be fought on a scale greater than ever, and the timescales are even faster than the human can comprehend” the letter reads.
“USE OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IN AUTONOMOUS WEAPONS “KILLER ROBOTS” CAN KILL THE ENTIRE HUMANITY”
“The weapons developed by this technology can become the weapons of terror, and if the weapons are hacked they could behave in an undesirable way beyond control. We do not have long to respond because when the Pandora’s box is open it would be hard to close it back.”
UN’s focused group to talk about these weapons had a scheduled meeting on Monday, but it was delayed until November according to BBC.
According to Financial Times, US, China, Russia, and Israel are the nations among others who are in a rush to develop autonomous weapons technology, the UK also opposes the ban on autonomous weapons.

The ban on these kinds of weapons is under heat since 2014, researchers and activists including tech professionals launched an appeal to ban Autonomous Weapons in 2015, British astrophysicist Stephen Hawking and Elon Musk have been continuously warned the potential dangers of AI in making killer Robots.
But it seems there is shadow boxing going on and international organizations are not serious about the issue, the time is ticking and the development is underway who will stop these “Killer Robots” once they are developed?
