Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 782G is expected to replace the Snapdragon 778G+

Qualcomm has introduced a new chipset for mid-range smartphones. This news is coming just two weeks after Qualcomm announced the release of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor. The new chipset is labeled as Snapdragon 782G. It is here to replace the Snapdragon 778G+. Snapdragon 782G+ is utilized in the existing lineup of smartphone SoCs. It is basically designed to be employed in affordable high-end as well as premium mid-range mobile phones.

The Snapdragon 782G (SM7325-AF) holds minimal improvement as to the Snapdragon 778G+. It is designed using the same fabrication process i.e., TSMC 6nm. Furthermore, it displays the same CPU and GPU. The CPU features:

  • one Cortex-A78 (Kryo 670 Prime) core clocked at 2.7GHz
  • three Cortex-A78 (Kryo 670 Gold) cores clocked at 2.2GHz
  • four Cortex-A55 (Kryo 670 Silver) cores clocked at 1.9GHz.

As per Qualcomm, the CPU performance of the Snapdragon 782G is 5% better compared to Snapdragon 778G+. It holds the Adreno 642L GPU. thus, making the new chip 10% more efficient in contrast to the previous-generation chip. The chipset is capable of driving Full HD+ screens at 144Hz and 4K screens at 60Hz. Moreover, it maintains up to 16GB LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.1 storage.

There is a built-in Spectra 570L triple-14-bit ISP. It provides support for around 200MP camera sensors. In addition to this, it can concurrently process images from three camera sensors (22MP each). It gives support for up to 10-bit color depth. Concerning video recording, it assists with up to 4K HDR video recording (HDR10, HDR10+, and HLG), and 720p video recording at 240fps. Other highlights of the Snapdragon 782G include:

  • support for 3D Sonic fingerprint reading sensors
  • Quick Charge 4+
  • aptX Adaptive audio codec
  • 90FPS burst capture of 12MP images

Connectivity features of Snapdragon 782G

The integrated Snapdragon X53 modem provides support for:

  • mmWave and sub-6GHz 5G networks
  • offers peak downlink speeds of up to 3.7Gbps
  • upload speeds of around 1.6Gbps
  • a dual-frequency positioning system (GPS, GLONASS, NavIC, Beidou, GPS, QZSS, Galileo)
  • Wi-Fi 6/6E
  • Bluetooth 5.2 (with LE Audio)
  • NFC
  • USB 3.1 Type-C.

As of now, Qualcomm hasn’t disclosed when smartphones with the Snapdragon 782G will arrive in the market. But we can expect it to feature in the Honor 80, expected to be announced later today. Furthermore, it could serve as a good chipset for premium mid-range Samsung smartphones like the Galaxy A74.
