Samsung And LG To Roll Out Software Update For 4K TVs

Not only Microsoft is celebrating today’s release of the Xbox Series X and Series S, TV manufacturers such as Samsung and LG are also starting to distribute new software updates as part of the next-gen consoles. Improvements to VRR, ALLM, and HDR are expected.

As Jason Ronald, current partner director in program management of the Xbox team, announced on Twitter, owners of LG and Samsung televisions can now keep an eye out for new software updates. The upcoming firmware updates should help to “take full advantage of the features of the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S “. In the USA, suitable updates are already being distributed for smart TV models from 2020 and 2019. However, so far no detailed changes have been discussed.

Updates should improve features like VRR, ALLM and HDR

In all probability, LG and Samsung will concentrate on optimizations with regard to High Dynamic Range (HDR), Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM), and Variable Refresh Rate (VRR), which in addition to 120 Hz operation via HDMI 2.1 as core functions of the next-gen consoles were proclaimed. The Twitter comments indicate, among other things, that LG has updated its 2019 OLED TVs from firmware version 4.8.0 to 5.0.3. This year’s LG OLED CX models, however, should be upgraded to version 3.11.26. For devices like the Samsung Q90T, update jumps from version 1402 to 1403 can also be seen.

If you are thinking about buying a new LG OLED TV, you should pay attention to the reports from last week. The manufacturer’s currently commercially available smart TVs are said to have problems with the variable frame rate (VRR). If the refresh rate falls below 120 Hz, as is common in most games, the image may flicker and the gray and black tones displayed incorrectly. A software update shouldn’t fix this problem, which is why many are currently waiting for a new panel batch and a statement from LG.
