Samsung and Nokia agree on a multi-year 5G patent license

Samsung is one of the world’s largest and most well-known smartphone brands. It has recently entered into a multi-year 5G patent agreement with Nokia. This agreement will permit Samsung to use Nokia’s fundamental inventions as well as patents in 5G technology. Moreover, it will utilize the tech for other relevant aspects in its smartphones and other mobile devices. Samsung will be making royalty payments to Nokia for using these patents, starting from January 1, 2023.

This is not the first time that the two companies have agreed on such a patent licensing deal. In fact, Samsung and Nokia had a similar agreement back in 2016, which ended in 2022. However, the companies have now renewed and expanded the cross-licensing deal to continue their partnership. Despite the agreement, neither company has revealed the terms of the deal nor the specific patents that are included in the agreement.

It is worth noting that Nokia is a significant player in the 5G connectivity space. It has around 20,000 patent families. Among those 20,000 patent families, 4,500 are dedicated essentially to 5G technology. The company has invested heavily in research and development over the years. Reportedly, it has spent over €130 billion since the year 2000.

Jenni Lukander, President of Nokia Technologies, mentioned in a statement, “Samsung is a leader in the smartphone industry. We are happy to have reached an exciting deal with them. The agreement gives both companies the freedom to innovate. Given the fact that Nokia is quite powerful in terms of the patent portfolio due to its decades-long investments in R&D as well as contributions to cellular standards and other related technologies.”

This partnership between Samsung and Nokia is a clear indication of the significance of 5G technology. It highlights the significant role played by patents in driving innovation in the industry.
