Samsung Announces 64-megapixel phone cameras

Samsung has made the announcement that it will be launching a new image sensor for mobile phones that will be equipped with a higher resolution than seen in the market.

The ISOCELL Bright GW1 is a 64-megapixel sensor. It uses the same as that of Samsung’s present  48-megapixel component pixels, that are 0.8μm-sized. This means that physically it will be a bigger sensor and it will capture more light.

Four pixels will be merged into one, thus the Bright GW1 will produce 16-megapixel images. It is similar to how the current 48-mega pixel produces 12-megapixel pictures by default.

Also, the new sensor of Samsung will be able to descramble the color filter to produce 64-megapixel full-resolution pictures in a good light. Even though IMX586 48-megapixel of Sony had a similar ability but Samsung did not have it. Samsung has also announced an updated 48-megapixel part that will offer the same feature.

Phone companies like Samsung, Huawei, Oppo, Vivo, and Xiaomi offer 48-megapixel cameras. It is expected that Samsung will start production of its 64-megapixel sensor by mid-2019.

This means that the feature might get displayed on spec sheets for the end of 2019 phones. If the image sensor market leader, Sony follows suit, Samsung might launch the sensor sooner, than later.
