Samsung brings Galaxy S22 camera features to older devices

Samsung is preparing to bring many of the camera features reserved for the Galaxy S22 family to older models. The accompanying OneUI 4.1 update is still being tested, but it’s clear that a good half dozen previous flagships will be considered.

OneUI 4.1 camera features for older devices in the works

It has an old tradition: Samsung is introducing new features with the new Galaxy S models, some of which reach the older models via software updates. As a post on the manufacturer’s Korean support forum explains, some of the “key Galaxy S22 OneUI 4.1 camera features” will also be made available for older models. The update schedule has not yet been determined but will be published shortly.

night portrait function

The nitography technology of the Galaxy S22 has been implemented for several models and allows night shots with the front camera in portrait mode and the rear camera. This should make portraits in poor lighting conditions much brighter and sharper. Supported models: Galaxy S21, Z Fold3, Z Flip3, S20, Note20, Z Fold2, Z Flip 5G

Pet Detection

Advanced pet recognition is also used on older models. This should make it possible to apply the right effects when taking pictures with both the front and rear cameras. Supported models: Galaxy S21, Z Fold3, Z Flip3, S21 FE, S20, Note20, Z Fold2, Z Flip5G, S20 FE

Lighting position editing function

In portrait mode, selected models can edit various background effects in portrait mode. With the S22 family, among others, the possibility to adjust the position of the lighting was introduced. Supported models: Galaxy S21, Z Fold3, Z Flip3, S21 FE, Note20, Z Fold2, Z Flip5G, S20 FE

Using telephoto lens for portrait videos

For some models with a telephoto lens, the OneUI 4.1 update should bring the ability to record significantly better portrait videos with close-ups of distant objects. Supported models: Galaxy S21, Z Fold3, S21 FE

Telephoto lens in Pro mode

In Pro/Pro video mode, the telephoto lens is now also supported on some models. Samsung will initially start with support for the Galaxy S21 Ultra, other models will follow soon. Supported model: Galaxy S21 Ultra / Z Fold3, S20 Ultra, Note20 Ultra, Z Fold2 planned support in the first half of 2022 (limited to models that support Expert RAW)
