Samsung’s display division begins marketing OLED panels with particularly high brightness. The two-layer so-called tandem OLEDs are said to meet the VESA Display HDR True Black 1400 standard and achieve up to 1600 candela.
As Samsung Display announced today, it is now introducing new OLED-based laptop screens based on so-called tandem OLED technology. The multi-layered structure of the panels allows them to achieve enormous brightness, with Samsung talking about up to 1600 candelas. According to the manufacturer, this exceeds the maximum of 1100 candela previously achieved with single-layer OLED panels on notebooks by over 40 percent. Another advantage is a significantly longer panel lifespan combined with higher energy efficiency. As usual, limitations apply to the extremely high brightness advertised by the manufacturer. It is not achieved permanently and if it is, then only in a relatively small area of the respective panel. The whole thing is particularly useful for HDR playback and readability outdoors should of course also benefit greatly.
In order to meet the VESA Display HDR True Black 1400 standard, a maximum brightness of 1400 candela must be achieved on at least ten percent of the display area. Additionally, black levels must be displayed at 0.0005 nits or less. The latter is of course not a problem for an OLED panel. Samsung already has the first buyers for its new tandem OLED panels who want to use them in their laptops. Lenovo is currently introducing the Yoga Pro 9i Aura Edition Gen 11, which is equipped with a 16-inch screen of the new type and was therefore the first device to receive True Black 1400 certification this month. Asus, Dell and MSI are also planning their own laptops later in the year, which will also use the new tandem OLEDs.
