Samsung Cancels IFA 2020 Creates Its Own Digital Event In September

Korean electronics giant Samsung is usually one of the largest exhibitors at the IFA in Berlin, after all the company has been renting an entire hall there for years to present its products. In 2020 nothing will come of it.

As Samsung has now officially confirmed, the company will not take part in IFA 2020 this year. This means that the largest manufacturer of such products will no longer be appearing at the last major trade fair for electronic products. Given the failure of all relevant major tech events outside of CES in January, this is not surprising.

Samsung will present its latest announcements and news as part of its own “digital event” in early September, the group said. Samsung will not participate in the IFA this year, but will continue to be a partner of the Berlin trade fair in the future, it said. A return in 2021, therefore, appears to be secured for the time being.

Technology fairs 2020 canceled in rows – only the IFA remains

Since the CES in January, the IFA has been the first of the major technology fairs in the western world to take place at least in a reduced form. The international radio exhibition was originally canceled due to the spread of the new coronavirus but was later announced as a live event with a modified concept and a very limited number of visitors.

The reasons for Samsung’s exit should be clear: as in the case of the cancellation of the Mobile World Congress 2020 in February and the now also canceled Computex 2020 in Taiwan in June, the global corona pandemic is the trigger. For Samsung, it should hardly make any economic sense to open up his usual giant package, while the number of visitors to the IFA is reduced to just 1,000 people per day.

The current IFA 2020 will take place from September 3 to 5, 2020 on the Berlin exhibition grounds under the radio tower. Samsung has not yet given an appointment for its own online event, but hopefully should not decide on one of the exhibition days. The company will then likely launch its product range for the second half of the year and the Christmas season.
