Samsung Dual Slide Screen Patent Gets Renders
Earlier this month, Samsung officially released the Galaxy S21 / S21+ / S21 Ultra flagship smartphone product line. In addition to the screen size, their camera modules are also slightly different. Interestingly, the company seems to be still exploring a retractable screen model that can increase the display area by about 30%, which reminds us of competing products such as LG Rollable that have been announced during CES 2021.
Earlier, Korean media reported that Samsung was preparing a new flexible screen technology, which is characterized by the ability to extend the 6-inch mobile phone screen to the 8-inch tablet level.
Although the details of the device are not yet known, the Dutch technology blog LetsGoDigital has discovered a design patent application filed by the company called “Dual Slide Electronic Device“.
It is reported that Samsung Electronics submitted this patent application in March 2020, and it was officially published in the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) database on January 21, 2021.
It can be seen that flexible materials are used on the front and back of the fuselage to ensure the smooth expansion and contraction of the screen. Not enough in a specific implementation, the company still has different ideas, such as using flexible materials such as metal film, fabric or leather.

To make it easier for everyone to understand, LetsGoDigital has especially worked with concept designer Jermaine Smit (also known as Concept Creator) to create a series of 3D renderings for this concept device (assuming that the back “secondary screen” is not included).
The gear guide-based mechanical structure allows the flexible screen to be rolled and retracted as needed, and the front camera can be installed under the screen by Infinity-O punching. In contrast, the rear camera module can more directly copy the existing solutions of the Galaxy S21.

In fact, before the retractable screen, Xiaomi has already shown the MIX Alpha “surround screen” device, but the high price (2550 euros) still prevents the company from opening up sales easily.
As for whether the smart phone with retractable screen can reduce the price to a lower level, and how to overcome the durability of the screen / the short board of anti-drop impact, it is currently unknown.
