Samsung faces competition for the top spot in the global smartphone industry

The South Korean conglomerate Samsung has been the biggest smartphone company for almost a decade. However, for the past few years, the market share of Samsung has been declining. Given the market share in Q1 2023, the difference between Apple and Samsung was recorded as 1% only.  

According to the most recent statistics from Counterpoint Research, Samsung was the most popular smartphone brand worldwide in the first quarter of 2023. It held a 22% market share of smartphones worldwide. After the release of the Galaxy S23 series in February, strong global sales were observed thus, helping the business to hold onto the top spot. Some reports claim that the Galaxy S23 sold significantly more units than the Galaxy S22 line did the previous year. It’s interesting to note that despite being one of the markets where Samsung does exceptionally well, smartphone sales in Europe fell by a staggering 41%.

On the other hand, the market share of Apple was recorded at 21% during the same period despite the fact that the company sold much more costly phones on average. Xiaomi recorded a market share of 11% in the global smartphone market whereas other Chinese companies like OPPO, Vivo, and Honor hold market shares of 10%, 7%, and 5%, respectively. In Q1 2023, almost 280 million smartphones were sold globally. In comparison, it was a decline of 7%  from Q4 2022 and a 14% fall as compared to Q1 2022.

Apple experienced the smallest fall in shipments among the top five smartphone manufacturers, culminating in its highest-ever numbers for the first quarter of the year. The top-ten smartphone brand with the quickest growth is now OnePlus. Since the firm doesn’t introduce any new phones in the second quarter, sales are typically down, and Samsung may find it difficult to maintain its top spot in Q2 2023. Next week, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Galaxy Z Fold 5 will be unveiled by the firm, and they will soon be available for purchase.
