Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 Dual-Fold And Tri-Fold Design Revealed

Galaxy Z Fold3 renders

Less than a year after getting the right moves with the Galaxy Z Fold 2, Samsung may be working on a third foldable version in just one way. According to a US patent filing company and also according to our friend David from @xleaks, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 will be available in two different variants: a double version and a triple version.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 Dual-Fold

The patent filing shows a device that looks strikingly similar to the Galaxy Z Fold 2, but instead of folding in half, it folds on both sides. The phone has two hinges on either side, instead of the center, which means it will stay in tablet mode even after folded, albeit with a smaller screen and four cameras facing you for selfies. You can still open the two hinges to show an even larger tablet-like display on the inside, and there’s a perforated selfie camera you can boot.

It’s hard to see what difference the double fold makes compared to the usual fold, although this time the external screen looks bigger. On the other hand, it allows flexibility in terms of entertainment and content, because the two hinges allow more freedom if you place the phone on a surface. Imagine something like a tent mode on Lenovo’s Yoga laptops. In fact, when you consider Samsung’s recent push with Dex, which is its solution to turn phones into computers, this freedom could come in handy when working with keyboards, etc. It would allow Samsung to bring some of the Samsung Experience software used in its Galaxy Tab Series to the Galaxy Fold 3.

The two folding sides also have speaker grilles, which allow the speakers to be lowered. And Samsung is likely to use its 120Hz screens to make the whole UI experience smoother and faster.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 Tri-Fold

But it’s only in the Tri-Fold that things get really interesting. This has a wraparound display, instead of the usual two separate panels. Think of something like Xiaomi Mi Mix Alpha, but with a much larger screen and possible tablet-like shape, according to Pigtou renders.

The hinges remain on both sides in this model but fold in opposite directions. As a result, what you get is a more phone-like shape, albeit much thicker than a regular smartphone. Having a wraparound screen though means that you’ll have a much larger screen no matter what shape you use the device in. Galaxy Fold and Galaxy Z Fold 2 have been criticized for having narrow external screens, and Samsung may be able to solve the problem with this new version.

Theoretically, Samsung could put an on-screen keyboard on a third of the screen, allowing users to prop the phone in a laptop-like shape.

It will be interesting to see how ready this wraparound display is for its debut, given that Xiaomi has never removed the Mi Mix Alpha from the concept phase (laboratory study). Samsung has had its Z Fold series durability issues and would like to avoid another such incident.

Availability and price of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3

It is unclear when Samsung will launch these devices or if they will only be ready by 2021. However, the company has done a great job of keeping up with its launches, despite the slowdowns in production chains caused by the pandemic around the world. world. So we won’t be surprised if the dual and tri-fold variants of the Galaxy Z Fold 3 arrive in the second half of the year. We also expect a price tag of around $ 2,000 for these devices, in keeping with Samsung’s premium brand for foldable phones, and the fact that the 5G chipsets will still cost the company a little above average.
