Samsung Inaugurates World’s Largest Mobile Phone Factory in India

Samsung Electronics opened of what it refers to as the world’s biggest mobile phone manufacturing facility in Uttar Pradesh-India. The opening was made in accordance with the plans of the South Korean giant, which is of seeking opportunities to expand its production in the South Asian country.

As per a company statement, the factory in Noida, present on the outskirts of New Delhi, would be doubling the Samsung’s Noida unit capacity for mobile phones to one hundred and twenty million units per year from six hundred and eight million units annually. The phase expansion would be completed by the year 2020, the statement further added.

The Noida plant of Samsung was set up in the year 1996 and is among the first two manufacturing units in India. The plant started its operations with the making of television sets which was way back in 1997, and then in 2005 the mobile phone manufacturing unit was added.

The new manufacturing facility would make everything from low-cost smartphones which are under hundred US dollars to Samsung’s flagship—S9 model.

Samsung has been assembling the mobile phones in India since 2007. It plans to export the Indian-made handsets to Europe, Africa and West Asia.

H.C. Hong—the Chief Executive Officer—Samsung India mentioned in a statement that they are in line with the Government policies and would continue to look out for assistance for achieving their dream of making India a global export centre for mobile phones.

The new thirty-five-acre facility was inaugurated by Narendra Modi—the Indian Prime Minister and the South Korean President—Moon Jaein. The facility would also help Samsung to compete with the rival firms like China’s—Xiaomi, which replaced the South Korean firm as India’s biggest smartphone brand by shipment at the start of this year.

Xiaomi also has plans of setting up three more factories in India.

Last year, India overtook the United States to become the world’s second-biggest smartphone market after China. As per a study by Cisco Systems, there would be seven hundred and eighty million connected smartphones in 2021, in comparison with three hundred and fifty-nine million in 2016.
