Samsung suffers the loss of a manufacturing contract for one more Qualcomm chip

Qualcomm has recently shared the news about its next launch event. In accordance with the latest information, Qualcomm is anticipated to hold the launch event on march 17, 2023. Some rumors indicate that the company is going to introduce the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 1 during the event. It is the descendant of the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 processor. It is believed that the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 1 will offer improved performance and efficiency. However, the news appears to be shocking for the South Korean tech company’s chip manufacturing unit.

Some reports indicate that the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 1 will be based on the 4nm process by TSMC. If this rumor is true, then Qualcomm is going to drop the 4nm LPE process by Samsung’s Foundry that was used for manufacturing Snapdragon 7 Gen 1. In contrast to Samsung’s 4m process, the 4nm process by TSMC is more efficient. Thus, indicating that the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 1 is going to be more efficient than the previous version. It seems like Qualcomm is slowly and gradually shifting to TSMC. Since Samsung has faced issues with efficiency and yield performance for the past many years.

Rumors claim that Snapdragon 7+ Gen 1 will use TSMC’s 4nm process

According to reports, the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 1 feature:

  • one Cortex-X2 CPU core clocked at 2.92GHz
  • three Cortex-A710 CPU cores clocked at 2.5GHz
  • four Cortex-A510 CPU cores running at a maximum frequency of 1.8GHz.
  • Adreno 725 GPU clocked at 580MHz: for graphics processing:

These features suggest that Snapdragon 7+ Gen 1 is going to be an underclocked version of the famous Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor. Besides this, Snapdragon 7+ Gen 1 is going to be the first in the Snapdragon 7 series that will use a Cortex-X series CPU.

According to another source, the leaked information about the Geekbench score of Snapdragon 7+ Gen 1 indicates that the chipset scored 1,232 points in Geekbench’s single-core CPU test and 4,095 points in the multi-core CPU test. Such scores are comparable to MediaTek Dimensity 9000, which was close to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. Thus, indicating that premium mid-range phones can perform as fast as last year’s flagship phones.

Samsung has some problems with the 4nm and 5nm nodes. Where the 3nm GAA is better in contrast to the 4nm and 5nm nodes. Some rumors even suggest that it is better in contrast to the TSMC’s 3nm process. Furthermore, some rumors also claim that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 will use Samsung Foundry’s 3nm GAA. But these are only rumors and should be taken with a handful of salt.
