Samsung will produce Ambarella’s 5nm processor for self-driving cars

The South Korean conglomerate has announced that it will produce the 5nm chips for Ambarella. Ambarella is a US-based company. It deals in edge AI fabless semiconductor technology. CV3-AD685 is a new semiconductor chip by Ambarella. It has been introduced to operate as an AI controller for autonomous cars. The tech firm Samsung claims that the new partnership will help to revolutionize the next generation of self-driving cars.

CV3-AD685 is one of the first chips by the company that is built on its CV3-AD family. CV3-AD family is a family of automotive AI central domain controllers. Moreover, Tier-1 automotive dealers have unveiled that they will bring forward new solutions based on CV3-AD SoC.  The recent chip is centered on the next-gen CVflow Ai engine by Ambarella. It is said to be twenty times more efficient and faster than its ancestor i.e., CV2. In addition to this, it is provided with neural network processing. Besides this, it has the capacity for general-vector and neural-vector processing. Both these vector processings are used in ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems). The vectors perform several functions in autonomous cars like 4D imaging radar, computer vision, deep sensor fusion, and path planning.

The chip consists of the following:

  • ARM Cortex A78AE
  • R52 CPU cores
  • an automotive-grade GPU (for visualization)
  • a hardware security module
  • an advanced ISP to process camera inputs
  • a dense stereo and optical flow engine

The 5nm process by Samsung Foundry is augmented for automotive-grade semiconductors. It is provided with tight process controls. It presents advanced IP for high reliability and traceability. Ambarella will rely on Samsung for its 5nm chips. It is because the South Korean firm has vast experience in the automotive foundry processes. In addition, the Samsung Foundry is highly experienced in proprietary technologies and chip package development.

The president and CEO of Ambarella mentioned that both companies have a good previous history of partnership. Ambarella is all set to introduce the world-class 5nm tech in their new CV3-AD685 SoCs. The automotive process technology by Samsung will enable us to introduce new levels of AI acceleration, power efficiency, and system integration to ADAS and L2+ via L4 autonomous vehicles.
