Sega CEO Rules Out Revival of Iconic Classic Game

Sega has finally rejected the dream of some gaming fans of a “mini” version of the classic Dreamcast console. A senior manager at the Japanese gaming company announced that they wanted to look to the future, not the past.

No Classic or Mini version of the Dreamcast

The company behind Sonic The Hedgehog has already brought several “mini” or “classic” versions of its classic Genesis game console onto the market, but stopped short of introducing a kind of retro reissue of the Sega Saturn, which was released in 1994, or the 1998 one introduced Sega Dreamcast so far.

In an interview with the English newspaper The Guardian Sega CEO Shuji Utsumi, who is responsible for Europe and the USA, has now pulled the plug on possible plans for a “Dreamcast Mini”. So anyone who was hoping that there would be a new version of the less successful but still legendary Dreamcast will probably have to say goodbye for now.

Utsumi would rather concentrate on modern products instead of looking into the past, he emphasized in an interview with the newspaper. “I’m not going in the mini direction,” they said. He would rather “appeal to modern gamers”. Sega is “not a retro company”. They appreciate the company’s heritage and attach great value to it, but at the same time they want to offer something new.

If this does not succeed, Utsumi continued, we ourselves will become a thing of the past. The Dreamcast came onto the market in 1998 and was considered more powerful than Sony’s PlayStation 2, which was launched two years later. Commercially, however, the console was far from being anywhere close to the success of the Sony console. Nevertheless, the Dreamcast is considered legendary today, precisely because it was technically far ahead of its time.

For Sega, the main priority is to introduce modern interpretations of a number of its classic titles. Franchises such as Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Shinobi, Golden Axe, Streets of Rage and Virtua Fighter are all set to appear in new editions. There is also the idea of ​​introducing Sega’s own subscription service. At least under Utsumi there will be no Dreamcast Mini.
