Self-Healing glass discovered Accidentally for Smartphones that Fix its own Cracks

A new glass for smartphones has been developed by a Japanese researcher. This glass can fix its own cracks. The glass is made up of polyester thioureas, it can self-heal when the user press the crack together by hand. This means that user won’t have heat the screen to melt material. The smartphone will fix its own cracks via self-healing glass.

The research of the Japanese researcher has been published in Science. The study can be used in mobile phone screens and other delicate devices. Moreover, it should be noted that that self-healing rubber and plastics are already created.

The new glass can easily be made by compression at broken areas This self-healing feature of glass was found out accidentally by the Japanese student Yu Yanagisawa who was making the material to use it as glue. The researcher said “High mechanical robustness and healing ability tend to be mutually exclusive. While some hard but healable materials have been developed, “in most cases, heating to high temperatures, on the order of 120°C or more, to reorganize their cross-linked networks, is necessary for the fractured portions to repair.”

Yu Yanagisawa discovered that edges joined each other when polymer glass surface was cut. So when he found out this, he compressed it for a half a second at 21°C temperature. Furthermore, the experiment revealed that once healed the material went back its original strength within a couple of hours.

Yanagisawa said:

“I hope the repairable glass becomes a new environment-friendly material that avoids the need to be thrown away if broken.”

Smartphone giants have started using self-healing material in devices that can heal small cracks over time.
