Slightly exaggerated: hobbyist builds crazy alarm system for his Steam Deck

A desperate gamer has built a completely crazy security system for his Steam Deck that is intended to prevent unauthorized play by third parties. The setup consists of a Raspberry Pi, a speaker, a camera and a small stun gun.

Insane security system for the Steam Deck

There are many ways to prevent other people from accessing your devices. You can set up passwords or keep the hardware inaccessible to others. An owner of a Steam Deck has now taken a much more complex route. After he was annoyed that his family always borrowed the console and the battery was dead when he wanted to play, he built an elaborate security system including a stun gun.

Like user ConroyyJenkinss on Reddit shows, the finished result is visually daunting. Particularly noticeable are the pointed handle attachments in neon orange from the 3D printer, which are intended to make holding the console uncomfortable. But even before this potentially happens, a loudspeaker plays an acoustic warning signal as soon as a person approaches the Steam Deck. A camera is connected to a Raspberry Pi and a Python script monitors the feed.

If these deterrent measures are not enough to scare unauthorized people away, after a while a small servo motor activates a mini stun gun mounted on the top of the handheld. According to the inventor, however, this should serve more as a deterrent.

The focus is on having fun with crafts

Of course, password protection or simply hiding the Steam Deck would have been at least as effective in protecting the console from unwanted access. Obviously the project was about having fun with crafting. Additionally, the entire deterrent apparatus may be quite easy to disable by unplugging the cable connecting the Raspberry Pi to the other components. However, according to the hobbyist, the crazy construct does its job. All family members now ask permission before borrowing the handheld.
