Snapchat is a famous social media app with millions of users all around the globe. The app is now removing access to all Al Jazeera content in Saudi Arabia.
Saudi authorities asked Snapchat to block Al Jazeera channel’s content as it violated domestic laws. Al Jazeera is a Qatari backed channel and as Saudi is having unhealthy ties with Qatar in recent times, this decision seems expected.
The four gulf nations, Saudi Arab, Bahrain, UAE and Egypt cut their ties with Qatar as they accused the country of supporting terrorists.
There are many restrictions already in Saudi Arabia, from women not given their rights to all basic social media apps being banned. The Saudi government never liked the content of Al Jazeera. They even asked Qatari government to completely close the channel at one time.
Now the country has demanded Snapshot to remove Al Jazeera in Saudi Arab. Snapchat spokesperson said
“We make an effort to comply with local laws in the countries where we operate.”
