Sony Sold 10 Million PS5 Consoles Despite Chip Shortage

Sony and Microsoft released their new consoles in autumn 2020 and both manufacturers can look forward to record sales. Microsoft was talking about its best-selling consoles of all time at Xbox Series X/S, while Sony named a number, namely 10 million consoles.

The world is currently in a serious chip crisis and it has been difficult to get components for months. This is also a problem for the console manufacturers because both – Sony and Microsoft – would sell more devices if they could also produce them.

Sony Hit The Record

And yet both console manufacturers are happy about fabulous sales: Microsoft did not provide any specific figures in its latest quarterly results but announced that no console has ever sold better than the duo Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X.

Sony, who is probably ahead of Microsoft in sales, on the other hand, gave details and let it be known that they had exceeded the mark of 10 million sold consoles according to The Verge. This is also a new record for the Japanese electronics giant, as Sony has never before brought more devices to women and men. In the case of the Japanese, this is definitely an announcement, because the PlayStation 5 can also overtake the PS4 with it.

And as mentioned: The PS5 managed that despite anything but optimal availability. Jim Ryan, President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, said: “The PS5 has reached more households faster than any console before, but we still have a lot of work to do as the demand for the PS5 continues to outperform supply.”

Says Ryan: “I want gamers to know that improving inventories is our top priority, even as we continue to face unique challenges around the world that affect our industry and many others.”

Sony has currently not only commented on hardware sales, but also on software: Accordingly, the starting title Spider-Man: Miles Morales has sold 6.5 million times. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart was bought by 1.1 million players, while Returnal had 560,000 copies.
