Surface Duo 3 May Receive a Folding Display instead of Dual Screens

Microsoft has abandoned the idea of connecting two displays with a hinge for smartphones. Instead, they are now said to be favoring the concept of a foldable main display like other smartphones with a foldable screen.

As reported by Windows Central, citing sources from the Microsoft environment, the Surface Duo 2 will probably not get a successor with two displays connected by a hinge. Instead, Microsoft probably wants to rely on a large main display that can be folded when folded.

Multitasking instead of two, now on one large folding display

Microsoft is thus giving up a unique selling point of the Surface Duo, which was always marketed as a “dual-screen” hybrid device between tablet and smartphone. In the meantime, a dual-screen design for the third generation Surface Duo is said to be in the drawers in Redmond, which should actually be on the market towards the end of 2023 as the Surface Duo 3.

Two displays with narrower edges were planned, which should have a stretched format. In the meantime, however, the software company is said to have given up this approach. Instead, they are now working on a “true foldable” design, although the Redmond company has allegedly been thinking about this approach since the launch of the Surface Duo 2 because there was some criticism of the dual-screen design.

Microsoft now allegedly wants to offer a device that uses a large foldable main display, as in the case of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4, the Vivo X Fold, or the Honor Magic Vs. In addition, the next Surface Duo, like the devices mentioned, should also have an external display on one of the outsides in order to be able to interact with the smartphone even when it is closed.

It may be some time before the next-gen Surface Duo actually launches, as Microsoft reportedly doesn’t yet have a concrete timeline for the redesigned folding-display model like it did for the new dual-screen it originally planned model already existed.
