Tesla Confirms 4680 Batteries Production For 1000 Tesla Cars Per Week
Tesla has confirmed that production of its new 4680 battery cells has now reached levels capable of manufacturing over 1,000 cars per week. The group has thus passed a new milestone.
This is reported, among other things, by Electrek. Tesla has recently been very reserved with its data on battery cell production. The last official information Tesla released was related to the Fremont pilot plant. That was in early 2022, though.
Since then, Tesla has revealed little about progress – although shareholders in particular have been waiting for it. The information from Tesla is also interesting because there have been a lot of setbacks in battery production in recent months. The planned production site in Grünheide was well behind schedule .
What is so special about the battery?
The 4680 battery cell is a new format introduced by Tesla in 2020 as the first cell designed from the ground up. The new development reduces costs.
In the past, Tesla has been involved in the development of new battery cells, but the main focus was on optimizing the chemistry of existing 18650 and 2170 cell formats and not on new developments.
According to Tesla, 868,000 battery cells of the 4680 type were produced in the last week alone. That’s enough to outfit over 1,000 Model Y vehicles. The cells are currently only used in series production at the Gigafactory Texas. That should change in 2023.
