Tesla Reduces The Price For Model Y And Cancels Smallest Version

Tesla surprisingly cancels the planned entry-level model for Model Y and lowers the price of the variants already available. The standard range version would simply have too little range, and therefore, according to Elon Musk, no right to exist.

The Model Y is now available for $ 3,000 cheaper, starting at $49,990. Even with the performance variant, Tesla is now going down the price of $1000 and is now around $59,990. The electric-car pioneer wants to boost demand for the SUV and at the same time compensate a little for the loss of the entry-level model that is still planned.

Entry-level model has been canceled for the time being

Tesla founder Elon Musk said on Twitter: “We have lowered the prices for the LR twin-engine model Y and will offer an LR single-engine Y in a few months, which improves affordability while the product remains excellent.” LR stands for Long Range, i.e. versions with a longer range. Musk also confirmed that the Model Y had remained under 250 miles, or around 400 kilometers, in the so-called EPA test cycle and thus did not meet expectations for a vehicle suitable for long-distance driving.

For the time being, there will, therefore, be no entry-level model, but work is continuing on further engines. But that also means that the Model Y cannot be nearly as cheap as Musk had announced at the presentation in 2017. Musk wanted the small SUV to come in under $ 40,000 in a simple configuration and with a single-engine. Experts are now more likely to expect a price of around $ 45,000 if an engine can be found in the foreseeable future.
