The credential sharing tool, unveiled by Thread Group, will advance smart home interoperability

Thread Group has released a new version for their Thread wireless protocol for 2024, allowing new Thread border routers and smart home gadgets from many companies, including Apple, Amazon, Google, and others, to instantly join the current network.

The next upgrade will include a new ‘Credential Sharing’ feature that will establish a single, wider Thread mesh network and will promote device interoperability. Matter, another of the two primary wireless protocols, attempted to address the issue presented by multiple manufacturers’ smart home ecosystems.

The Credential Sharing function will assist in lowering latency and increasing the battery life of linked devices

Thread Group notes in the release article, “The Thread Group’s 2024 roadmap includes six new features and enhancements to enable developers and product makers to build for this new open, interoperable era.” The Credential Sharing function not only solves the interoperability problem, but it also simplifies setup and enhances the dependability of all linked smart home devices.

These enhancements will also make it much easier to add a new Thread border router or Thread device to an existing Thread network to establish a larger-ranging Thread network. This will assist in minimizing latency, remove failure spots, and extend the battery life of smart home devices. The new Threads Credential Sharing functionality will assist companies and organizations in developing trustworthy linked experiences.

While the upgrade is intriguing, Threads has not stated when it will be deployed or when it will be available in Matter hardware and networks. The firms that employ Matter and Threads in their smart home goods and services have the solution.
