The Development of Home-Based Internet

Home internet first became popular in the mid to late 1990s. For many years, dial-up internet was the most popular method of home internet. That was eventually replaced by cable internet. While cable internet is still the most popular method, fully wireless internet from cell phone networks has become increasingly popular. This kind of internet makes it easy to connect many devices in addition to the home’s computers.

Dial-Up Internet

Dial-Up internet was the first type of home Internet to gain widespread acceptance. It was seen as revolutionary when it initially became popular in the mid-1990s. It made it easy for anyone with a phone line in their home (the vast majority of people in developed countries) to connect to the Internet. During this time, America Online (AOL) had by far the largest market share of any dial-up internet provider.

Dial-up internet began to fade in popularity in the early 2000s. At this point, cable-based internet began to gain a foothold. As more and more people began to learn about cable internet and its advantages, complaints about dial-up internet connections started to become more prevalent. Many people complained about the slow speeds and relative lack of reliability of dial-up internet. 

Cable Internet

Cable-based internet started to become popular in the early 2000s. It became the most popular form of internet connectivity in the mid-2000s. Compared to dial-up internet connections, cable internet was much faster and much more reliable.

Like dial-up internet connectivity, which used the phone lines that people already had in their homes, cable internet uses the TV cable outlets that most homes in developed countries already have. This makes it just as convenient to connect to cable internet. Also, the costs of cable internet subscriptions are relatively low because many people simply bundle this service with a cable TV subscription offered by the same provider. 

The Future of Internet Connectivity

Cable internet is the most common method of internet connectivity in America today. However, various alternatives are emerging. Perhaps the most interesting is fiber optic internet connectivity.

Fiber optic internet generally offers speeds much faster than those offered by cable. This has led to very high demand from consumers, particularly those who use a great deal of bandwidth. Major tech companies, such as Google, have started offering fiber optic internet service. However, the spread of fiber optic internet is currently limited due to the relative lack of supporting infrastructure.
