The File app receives new feature updates for iPadOS 16

The iPadOS 16 was released in October 2022. A number of various new features were introduced to the Files app. These features enable the users to manage their files just like it is done on a computer. As of now, an update has been released for the Files app. This update contains several advanced options with an emphasis on view folder sizes, the ability to change file extensions, and more.

The long-awaited features have finally arrived in the Files app on iPad.

Starting with the interface. It has been updated with navigation buttons. These buttons are similar to the Finder on macOS. You can now navigate between the folders given the latest forward and back buttons. The forward and back buttons are located next to the name of the folder at the top of the screen.

Tapping on the arrow next to the folder name, a menu appears. The menu shows the following options:

  1. Move the file
  2. Copy the file
  3. Rename the file
  4. Quick access to the previous folder
  5. Size of the folder
  6. Get Info button [shows more details about the selected folder]

Similarly, the menu that appears while clicking on a file has also got some additional options. These options include the following:

  • Quick Actions to markup
  • Rotate
  • Convert images to PDF
  • Remove the background of an image

The Quick Actions vary in accordance with the file format.

How to change the file extensions with the Files app

Indeed one of the major modifications to the Files app with iPadOS 16 is the possibility to change file extensions. Previously, it could be done using third-party apps. Follow these steps to change a file extension in iPadOS 16 given the Apple’s Files app:

  1. Open the Files app
  2. Tap the Organize Folders button
  3. Select View Options.
  4. Click on the Show All Extensions option.
  5. Press and hold (or right-click) on a file to rename and change its extension
  6. The name and extension will be changed.

Given the improvements to the Files app, iPadOS 16 now offers various other new features. The new features include translations with the camera, Stage Manager, Focus Filters, iCloud Shared Photo Library, and a new Weather app.
