The new AI chip from Samsung and Naver is eight times more powerful than NVIDIA’s
The South Korean conglomerate Samsung is putting in all its efforts to advance AI chip design. The company is also partnering with other companies to come up with something new and innovative. Naver is another South Korean company that has partnered with Samsung to develop a new AI chip. The main focus of this partnership was to improve power efficiency. NVIDIA has been considered the gold standard when it comes to AI chips. Reportedly, the new chip is eight times more powerful than the recent offerings by NVIDIA.
The chip claims more efficiency with comparable performance
In December 2022, a MOU between Samsung and Naver was signed. The memorandum was relevant to the development of AI chips. In order to take the initial steps, a practical task force was formed. At a Ministry of Science and ICT event in Seoul, the AI chip was revealed. HyperCLOVA X, Naver’s mega-scale artificial intelligence model, is expected to be powered by this new microprocessor that was developed by Naver and Samsung.
This chip, which was unveiled as a Field-Programmable Gate Array, allows engineers to alter the design, which is primarily utilized in the creation of prototypes prior to the chip’s mass production. This chip is specifically designed for “inference,” or the AI model’s capacity to generate rational results following the conclusion of its “learning” phase.
In contrast to the competing NVIDIA chips, the chips are eight times more efficient, claims Naver. The improved power efficiency is a result of the integration of low-power DRAM. With this approach, the chip offers the same computational performance but with low power consumption.
