To comply with European regulations, iOS 17 will support app sideloading

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple will for the first time in iOS 17 permit iPhone customers to download apps stored outside of its official App Store.

The modification, often known as sideloading, would enable customers to download the software without having to go via the App Store, saving developers from having to pay Apple’s 15 to 30 percent fees.

The Digital Market Act (DMA) by the EU has been implemented since November 1, 2022. It states that the gatekeeper companies must open up their services and platforms to other companies and developers. Such Acts could have a major impact on the gatekeeper platforms. Since it would call for modifications in the ‌App Store‌, Messages, FaceTime, Siri, and more. Gurman states that the company will implement the new European regulations by 2024. Apple intends to implement sideloading support.

According to Apple, sideloading will “undermine the privacy and security protections” that iPhone users depend on, making consumers more susceptible to viruses, swindles, data tracking, and other problems. Apple must adhere to the DMA, though, or it might face fines equal to up to 20% of its annual global revenue for breaking EU legislation.

According to a Gurman article from December 2022, Apple was thinking about introducing security measures including verification, a procedure for which it could charge a fee rather than taking money from app sales. Users can browse apps outside of the Mac App Store while being safe because of Apple’s authentication system for Mac.

Alternative app shops might become available outside of the European Union if other nations pass legislation with a similar structure. For instance, the United States is thinking about passing laws that would make Apple permit sideloading.
