TPM 2.0 creates problems with AMD processors in Windows 10 and 11

Despite several updates regarding the performance of AMD processors under Windows 10 and Windows 11, more and more users are reporting so-called “stuttering” problems. This kind of shock would occur with an activated TPM 2.0 (fTPM) function. In late October, Microsoft and AMD addressed issues with Ryzen CPUs with an optional Windows 11 update, which caused a performance loss related to the L3 cache used. But the reports of PC systems freezing and shutting down keep on piling up.

It doesn’t seem to matter whether you’re on the desktop, in apps, or in games. Many users identified the Trusted Platform Module (TPM) as the cause, which Windows 11 requires for upgrades and updates.

Disabling AMD fTPM in UEFI BIOS (so far) only solution

If the mouse pointer stutters for a few seconds (see video), the sound is distorted and the Windows 11 PC behaves in slow motion, users of AMD Ryzen processors could actually be affected by the TPM problem, which has only recently appeared in several Reddit posts was described in more detail. The flaw has not yet been officially confirmed by Microsoft and AMD, but those affected are eagerly awaiting a firmware update for the CPU, chipset, motherboard, and operating system.

The only solution is to disable the fTPM feature in the UEFI BIOS. Note from Reddit user: “If you’re going to disable the TPM, remember: If you’re using BitLocker, have your encryption key handy.

You’ll probably need it.” While this solution seems like a good decision for Windows 10, Windows 11 users should be careful. The Redmond company requires not only the security standard introduced years ago when upgrading to the new operating system, but also when updating. If deactivated, users risk being banned from future updates – which has not been the case (yet). Now we have to wait until the cause of the “stuttering” problem is found, which disrupts the interaction between Windows systems and TPM 2.0.
