U.S. President Donald Trump has granted TikTok a temporary reprieve, giving the popular video-sharing platform an additional 75 days before a potential ban takes effect. This move comes after the enforcement of a bipartisan law that required ByteDance, TikTok’s Chinese parent company, to sell its U.S. assets or face eviction from the American market.
Over the weekend, TikTok was briefly inaccessible in the U.S., with the app being removed from stores for more than 12 hours starting Saturday night. This marked the first substantial implementation of the law, which many view as a response to growing concerns over national security and data privacy linked to Chinese-owned platforms. The short-lived shutdown caused uproar among TikTok users who rely on the app for entertainment, business, and social interactions.
The president’s executive order puts a hold on the ban for now, allowing TikTok to continue operating while ByteDance navigates its next steps. Part of the proposal includes creating a joint U.S.-based venture to maintain the platform’s presence in the country, a potential solution to ongoing tensions.
While TikTok remains under scrutiny, this temporary delay signals an opportunity for negotiations and resolutions. The additional time granted by the administration could pave the way for a compromise that satisfies both the concerns of lawmakers and the platform’s massive U.S. user base.
