Customers of the mobile phone provider Trump Mobile are currently affected by a widespread data leak. A vulnerability on the official website for pre-ordering the new T1 smartphone allowed unauthorized access to the entire customer database. This affects sensitive information from buyers, some of whom have been waiting for delivery of the announced device for a year. The compromised data includes full names, physical residential addresses, email addresses and telephone numbers of the purchasers. Payment details such as credit card information were not affected by the incident. Nevertheless, disclosing private contact details represents a significant risk for those affected. The T1 smartphone itself continues to be severely delayed, which caused dissatisfaction in advance.

Like the YouTubers Coffeezilla (see above) and penguinz0 They report that they were made aware of the problem by an anonymous IT security researcher. They had ordered the device themselves and were able to verify that their own data was accessible in the unprotected database. The vulnerability also made it possible to see the exact number of previous pre-orders. The data read shows a clear picture: so far only around 10,000 individual customers have placed around 30,000 orders. That’s in stark contrast to previous estimates, which put pre-orders at nearly 600,000. A deposit of $100 (around 86 euros) is required for the smartphone.
In addition to the data leak, the company is facing other allegations. Original advertising promises that the phone would be made entirely in the USA have now been toned down. The marketing now simply says that the device was “designed with American values in mind.” The ongoing delays and unclear communication channels have already led to political criticism. A US senator criticized the approach in an open letter. According to current reports, the security gap has now been closed. However, there remains a loss of trust for buyers whose data has potentially been copied. The company has not yet commented in detail on the background.
