Twitter Bans Links To Other Social Networks

Twitter is launching a new policy after all the hassle over journalists’ accounts being suspended and the many users migrating to Mastodon. The company prohibits the distribution of links to certain other platforms – including Facebook and Truth Social in addition to Mastodon.

Twitter justifies this as a measure against “free advertising” for competing social media websites. The publication of links to the competitors will be prohibited in the future. Yes, Twitter does indeed ban links to Facebook, Instagram , Mastodon, Tribel, Post, Nostr, and Donald Trump’s Truth Social.

As a result of this new policy, users can no longer use their Twitter bio to link to their other social media profiles, nor can they post tweets asking their followers to follow them elsewhere.

Linktree and Co. are also “banned”

Furthermore, the company restricts the use of third-party aggregators such as Linktree and Link.bio. Twitter warns that users who attempt to circumvent the new policy through technical means such as URL cloaking or other methods could have their accounts suspended.

In a series of tweets, the company announced the decision and referred to the new policy, which is effective immediately: “We know that many of our users are active on other social media platforms.
