Twitter Limits 2FA To Twitter Blue Members

Twitter has been undergoing some major changes recently. Ever since Elon Musk took over the platform in October 2022, a lot of new features have been introduced to Twitter. Musk has created a new paid subscription version for Twitter called Twitter Blue, allowing users additional perks while using the app.

It is also notable that a lot of Twitter employees have also been laid off after Musk’s takeover of the company. Recent findings revealed that the Twitter employee count is at 1800 right now, which is less than the number of employees in 2012. Even though it is clear that Musk plans to reorganize company personnel based on his choices, these decisions seem too sudden and drastic. People are quite interested in the future of the platform.

What Is Twitter Blue

Twitter Blue is a paid subscription service that was recently launched on Twitter. The service is not an additional app but can be directly accessed from the Twitter app. Twitter Blue allows users to get a blue verification badge and other additional perks while using the app.  Let’s see what new changes have been introduced to Twitter by Elon Musk and how this can affect the security of normal Twitter accounts.

Changes Introduced To 2FA

Twitter Blue has a lot of additional services and perks other than allowing users to access a verification badge. If we look at all the new features of Twitter Blue, some of them allow users to customize the look and feel of the app and change the icon of the platform. Additionally, users can also access NFTs and use them as their profile pictures. Twitter Blue will also allow users to upload longer forms of content as well.

It was recently revealed that Twitter Blue would also allow users to access two-factor authentication exclusively. So users without Twitter Blue can no longer access two-factor authentication. Twitter stated that the app would not allow the platform to send text messages for two-factor authentication from non-Twitter Blue accounts. It means users will need to pay for Twitter Blue if they want to access two-factor authentication.

This step has led many people to question the security of Twitter accounts going forward. There is a chance that many Twitter users will simply stop using Twitter altogether rather than pay to access a security feature that some believe should be mandatory. We are yet to see if any alternative option will be introduced for Twitter users or not. However, for now, Twitter users will not be able to access two-factor authentication until they get a Twitter Blue subscription.

Conclusion

Many new changes have been made to Twitter in the past couple of months. Be it the reinstatement of banned accounts, removal of doxxing, or introduction to Twitter Blue, the platform is definitely changing constantly. Even though most of these changes seem quite interesting, the removal of two-factor authentication for non-subscribers seems like a dangerous move. The step could increase the probability of account hacking activities for people who have not subscribed to Twitter Blue.
