Twitter May Start Charging All Users

In recent months, Elon Musk has rebuilt the service formerly known as Twitter with a sledgehammer. Recently, however, things became a little quieter on the topic again. But that could change soon because Musk apparently wants to make X chargeable.

Does “X Premium” come with “X Basic”?

Twitter or, to edit posts subsequently and to be able to write and publish longer texts.

Those who do not pay for Twitter/X will always come across various restrictions, but in principle, the social media service is freely available to everyone. But that could change soon: Because Elon Musk announced during a live-streamed panel discussion with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that his side wanted to move to a “small monthly payment” that would be mandatory for everyone.

Bots to be blamed

As TechCrunch reports, Musk says this is necessary to get the bot problem under control: “It’s the only way I can imagine to fight huge armies of bots. Because a bot only costs a fraction of one “Pennies – say a tenth of a penny – but even if he has to pay a few dollars or so, the effective cost of bots is very high,” Musk said. In short: bots should no longer be worthwhile. Musk didn’t say exactly how much the new basic subscription might cost, but simply said it would be a “small amount of money.”

At the most recent appearance, Musk also announced current X numbers: According to this, X now has 550 million monthly active users, who generate between 100 and 200 million posts per day. However, it is not clear whether this includes automated posts – be it from classic bots or posts from news sites.

It is currently not known when this payment barrier will come and exactly how much the whole thing will cost. But you can definitely ask yourself whether that wouldn’t be a shot in the foot, since minimal costs would probably persuade many users to abandon X for good.
