Twitter Might Double The Character Limit to 280 Characters In a Single Tweet

Twitter is currently testing to increase its 140 character limit aimed at improving user experience, Twitter users are have been facing frustration for long with a limited number of characters that are allowed to send information across the platform, many users are not able to add the important lines which could create a real difference in one single tweet.

The social media giant has acknowledged the need for more characters in a tweet and the company is testing whether to double the previous limit of 140 characters.

The social network said on Tuesday that it has allowed a small group of its 328 million users to tweet with 280 characters in different languages including English, Portuguese, French, and Spanish.

However, the company has not revealed that how many people are participating in tests, Aliza Rozen Twitter’s product manager and Ikuhiro Ihara senior software engineer said in a blog post their research indicates users who tweet in English are frustrated more than those who Tweet in Chinese, Korean and Japanese.

This is because of the fact that the English language takes more characters to complete the sentence as compared to Korean, Chinese and Japanese.

The blog post said “We will collect data and feedback while testing and hope to see fewer character limits which would make it much easier for everyone to comprehend the message and tweet accordingly with more character count.

The is the first time in the history of 11 years that Twitter thought of changing the character limit, the new move comes in place with intensifying competition thrown by other rivals such as Facebook and Snapchat. Twitter now has to bring in effective changes that might attract more users to the platform.

E-marketer analyst Debra Aho Williamson said the 240 characters limit will definitely make users tweet more often and bring in more users on Twitter. But character limit is just the one small step from Twitter, it has to do lot more in the future including clamp down on abusive tweets and content filtration which complies with the community guidelines.
