Update to Windows 11: Sun Valley for Everyone and Sun Valley 2 almost RTM status

While Microsoft is updating to Windows 11 21H2 (“Sun Valley”) is now available for all authorized – ie compatible – computer systems, the development work on the upcoming Windows 11 22H2 (“Sun Valley 2”) is nearing completion and the transition to final RTM status is imminent.

Windows 11 21H2 for everyone

As Microsoft in the updated documentation on: docs.microsoft.com announced that the first update from Windows 10 to Windows 11 will now be offered on all eligible systems that have at least the May 2020 Update, Windows 10 2004 (“20H1”) installed and fully compliant with the system requirements of the latest operating system.

Microsoft is now talking about a “wide deployment” of the operating system “on all authorized systems”. The update to Windows 11 21H2 officially requires the following preconditions, some of which can (still) be avoided with various workarounds.

  • Windows 10 2004 (“20H1”) or later
  • active TPM 2.0 or fTPM 2.0
  • Secure Boot Enabled in UEFI
  • a compatible processor

However, Microsoft has already announced several times that stricter requirements must be taken into account when moving to the next higher feature update. The workarounds could end with the Fall 2022 update, also known as Windows 11 22H2 (“Sun Valley 2”), but that’s not quite sure yet.

Windows 11 22H2 is approaching RTM status

While Windows 11 21H2 is available as an update for all eligible systems, we have been informed that the Autumn Update of 2022, which will bring the operating system to the level of Windows 11 22H2, is about to be officially completed and will therefore already have “Release To Manufacture (RTM)” status between 20 and 24 May. Microsoft is then scheduled to begin distributing Windows 11 22H2 this summer, with wide availability planned for the fall of this year. More on the topic After Windows 11 22H2 reaches RTM status, Windows 11 Insiders will see the new Insider Preview Builds for the Windows 11 23H2 feature update for next year for the first time.
