With the free VMware Workstation Pro download you can use guest operating systems in virtual machines parallel to the running Windows installation. This makes sense if you need an older version of Windows or a completely different operating system for certain tasks or even want to try out potentially unsafe programs and configurations. VMware Workstation Pro version 17.6.2 is currently available.
VMware Workstation Pro runs on Windows 10, Windows 11, Windows Server 2019 and Windows Server 2022, but in all cases requires a 64-bit version of the operating system. The software also places further demands on the hardware. At least 2 GB of RAM, 2.5 GB of free hard drive space and a compatible x86/AMD64 processor are required after it came onto the market in 2010.
Depending on the guest operating system installed, different and higher requirements may of course apply. Creating new virtual machines is incredibly easy with VMware Workstation Pro, as a wizard guides you through the most important steps. You absolutely need the appropriate installation medium, such as the ISO of Windows 11. Information about the virtual hardware can either be adopted or adapted to your own requirements.
The virtual guest operating system then runs in a separate window and is isolated from the actual Windows installation in a similar way to an additional PC in the network, but of course uses the existing hardware such as the processor, graphics card and RAM. Other components such as printers, DVD drives or USB sticks can also be passed on to the guest. File exchange is possible both through shared folders and via drag-and-drop.
VMware Workstation Pro now replaces VMware Workstation Player for private and non-commercial use and offers an expanded range of functions compared to it. In principle, the software can still be used to create, run and manage virtual machines. However, there are some advanced professional functions added.
For example, VMware Workstation Pro can display and clone multiple virtual machines at the same time, create virtual networks, connect to remote servers, and manage snapshots more comprehensively. The latter are practical, for example, if you use different configurations of the operating system or want to quickly restore it in the event of damage.
In addition to the Windows version offered here, VMware Workstation Pro is also available for Linux, while Mac users can use VMware Fusion Pro. For commercial use you must purchase a license. Similar software is available with VirtualBox.
