What OLED Panels New iPad Pro Use? The Best On The Market

The next generation of Apple’s iPad is showing signs of a development that one of the world’s largest display suppliers certainly did not expect: instead of Samsung, arch-enemy LG will become the main supplier of the OLED panels for the new Apple tablets.

LG Display: the only supplier of new OLED panels

Apple wants to introduce tablets with OLED displays for the first time in a few days, after letting the entire year of 2023 go by without a single new introduction in the iPad lineup. For the first time in a long time, LG’s display division has been able to achieve a small victory over the OLED leader Samsung, because Apple is probably relying exclusively on LG Display as the supplier of the panels for its new iPads.

This is reported by analyst Ross Young from Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC), who has good contacts in the supply chain. According to him, Apple is planning new iPad Pro models with 11.1- and 12.9-inch display diagonals, with which they want to leave all competitors “far behind”. According to him, the OLED panels of the new iPad Pro are said to be the best products of their kind to date.

Specifically, according to Young, this means that Apple wants to offer LTPO technology with a maximum refresh rate of 120 Hertz, whereby the use of the “tandem stack” design in conjunction with special techniques for using a particularly thin design should lead to an impressive result. The panels are said to be “ultra-thin and light” overall but can offer enormous brightness, a longer battery life and a longer service life.

Samsung struggles meeting Apple’s demands

LG Display was probably able to serve Apple as its main supplier primarily because Samsung also wanted to supply panels, but was unable to meet Apple’s requirements. According to his sources, there were problems with Samsung panels optimizing its in-house tandem OLED design. In order not to endanger the schedule for the market launch of its new iPads, Apple chose LG as its partner.

According to Young, Apple will unveil a total of four new tablets at its event on Tuesday. The main focus of the presentation, which is only transmitted via stream, is probably on the new iPad Pro with 11.1- and 12.9-inch OLED displays. There will also be two new iPad Air models, each with a 10.0-inch display and, for the first time, a 12.9-inch display. However, LCDs are apparently still used in these models.

According to previous reports, Apple wants to introduce extensive AI functions for the first time with the new iPads in conjunction with the new iPadOS 17.5. In the case of the Pro models, there is an Apple M3 or even the new Apple M4 under the hood of the new devices, while the iPad Air variants should be equipped with the Apple M2 or M3.
