WhatsApp is working on voice message transcription for the Android version of the app

Last year in May, WhatsApp introduced the voice message transcription feature. Since then, the feature has only been available to the iOS version of the app. According to some recent pieces of information, the company is perhaps now ready to debut this feature on the Android version of the app.

The new feature was reportedly, found in the WhatsApp beta version 2.24.7.7 during an APK teardown. It was spotted by the folks at TheSpAndroid. Reportedly, they came across several lines of code that appear to indicate a new feature is being worked on for the app’s Android version. These point to the end-to-end encrypted transcripts.

To be more precise, the code strings comprised:
• An additional 150MB of app data will download in order to allow transcripts.
• Enable
• Prior to listening, read the transcripts.
• “WhatsApp provides end-to-end encrypted transcripts by using the speech recognition feature on your device. Find out more.
• Turn on Transcripts.

From the above-mentioned details, it is clear that the activation of this feature requires downloading 150MB of data. It will work by using the speech-recognition software of the device. It might be located under Chats in the app Settings. Despite the appearance of code strings, the feature is not available to use. Perhaps it is not activated yet suggesting that it is currently in the early development phase.

Currently, there are no details on when the voice message transcription feature will roll out for the Android version of the app. Given the fact that the new feature was spotted during an APK teardown of the app so there is a possibility that it might not make its way to the stable version of the app.
