Windows 10 20H1 Support Ends December: Time To Upgrade

Microsoft has started notifying users that support for Windows 10 version 20H1 is expiring. The end of support is set for December, from 2022 this Windows version will no longer receive any security or quality updates.

Microsoft has now also reminded of this on Twitter and in the Windows Message Center. Please note that the regular support period is expiring. The last planned update will be delivered on December 14, 2021, i.e. December Patch Day. Microsoft’s usual practice is to first notify users of the end of support and then automatically update them to the latest version later. There is no announcement for a “compulsory update” this time (yet).

It is not uncommon for users to use the Windows update function to automatically import the new versions. Microsoft has been angry with this for years – because the “forced updates” are an unwanted intervention for many users and can lead to problems. This form of “forced update” from an older Windows 10 version to the latest Windows 10 update has been discussed again and again for years. It is always about the versions that are about to no longer receive support from Microsoft.

Microsoft informs users as follows:

• As a reminder: End of service for Windows 10 Version 2004 – December 14, 2021
• On December 14, 2021, all editions of Windows 10 version 2004 (20H1) will reach the end of their service life. After this date, devices running these editions will no longer receive monthly security and quality updates.

According to Microsoft, the half-yearly feature updates should always be used as quickly as possible so that you don’t suddenly get stuck with a version for which the company no longer offers security updates.

Microsoft’s goal is to create the most secure base possible for the end-user, and that only works if supported Windows versions are used. Microsoft had accelerated the update distribution in the previous versions and is therefore trying to get users of older Windows 10 versions to quickly update to the current version. This can also be seen very well from the distribution of the number of users. In Adduplex’s unofficial statistics, around 14 percent were still counted as users of Windows 10 20H1.
