Windows 11 Beta Build Introduces “Drag Tray” for Easier File Sharing

The latest Windows 11 Beta build 22635.4805 has introduced some intriguing new features, including improvements to Snap Layouts and the gamepad keyboard. But there’s a hidden gem that’s got enthusiasts talking: Microsoft is testing a new, creative way to share files.

Spotted by @phantomofearth on X, the new feature—dubbed the “Drag Tray”—allows users to share files by simply dragging them to the top of the screen. Once you do, a tray appears with apps like Outlook, Phone Link, and others, making it easy to drop the file and share it instantly. The best part? This feature doesn’t interfere with Snap Layouts, since those only activate when dragging a window, not files.

Here’s what @phantomofearth shared about this hidden feature:

“Microsoft is experimenting with a new file sharing UI in Windows 11: the ‘Drag Tray.’ When dragging a file, the tray shows up at the top of the screen with a drag here to share hint and lists a few apps. Has a more options button to open the share sheet. (hidden, Beta 22635.4805)” pic.twitter.com/LXpkTwKZu2

Although Microsoft hasn’t officially announced this new sharing experience, you can give it a try if you’re running build 22635.4805. Here’s how:

  1. Download ViveTool from GitHub and extract the files to an easy-to-access folder.
  2. Open Command Prompt as Administrator and go to the folder where you saved ViveTool using the CD command. For example, type CD C:\Vive if that’s where you placed the files.
  3. Run the following command:
  4. vivetool /enable /id:45624564,53397005,48433719
  5. Restart your computer.

  6. And that’s it! You’ll now be able to experiment with the Drag Tray feature and see how this innovative new sharing method works. Microsoft continues to explore new ways to enhance productivity, and it’ll be exciting to see how this feature evolves in the future.
