As announced, Microsoft is now “welcoming” Windows 8.1 users with a full-screen warning that the operating system will reach its final end of support in January 2023. Therefore, Windows 8.1 now displays a corresponding warning once the latest July Patch Day update KB5015874 is installed. Microsoft has opted for an extremely annoying way to do this, which is a notification in full-screen mode. You can’t overlook that. Microsoft released Windows 8.1 on October 17, 2013. Support will end after less than ten years.
“January 10, 2023, is the last day Microsoft will provide security updates and technical support for PCs running Windows 8.1. We want to thank you for your loyalty and help you prepare for the future,” the Windows 8.1 notification reads.
The notification is controlled by the program EOSnotify.exe. This program allows users to suspend the alerts. There is a “Remember me later” option that will show the notification again in 35 days.
Alternatively, you cannot display the warning message again until the latest security update is released. That’s what the “Remember me after support ends” option is for. Then the next warning about the end-of-life status would not appear until January 2023. If you do not make a selection, you will be reminded of the approaching end of support on every reboot.
According to Microsoft, the notification will not appear on managed Pro and Enterprise devices, as well as Windows Embedded 8.1 Industry Enterprise and Windows Embedded 8.1 Industry Pro devices. For Windows 8.1 users, there is no longer a free upgrade to Windows 10 or Windows 11.
