Windows app for PS5 controllers released

Sony has introduced a new tool that allows the PlayStation 5’s DualSense controller to be updated on the Windows PC as well. This means that firmware updates for the controller can also be installed without PS 5. Actually, this innovation was a long time coming, because the new DualSense controller of the PlayStation 5 can be used just like the DualShock controller of the PlayStation 4 for playing games on the Windows PC and therefore does not require a console.

However, the DualSense controllers previously had the limitation that firmware updates could only be installed via the console. This limitation no longer applies. “PC gamers can now update their DualSense wireless controller with the latest firmware for Windows 11 and select Windows 10 devices without connecting a PS5,” Sony announced today.

Firmware Updater Free

All you need is the “Firmware Updater for DualSense Wireless Controller” application, which Sony makes available for free. The controller must then be connected via a USB cable – the update will not work wirelessly. The application will then start when it has recognized the controller, with the further necessary instructions.

This includes, for example, the request to download the new firmware on the PC. In addition, only one controller can be updated at a time, in order for other controllers to be updated, you need to start the update process from the beginning. The application is currently only available directly from According to Sony, there are the following minimum requirements that the computer must meet for the updated client:

PC App Requirements

  • Windows 10 (64-bit) or Windows 11
  • More than 10MB of available disk space
  • Screen resolution of 1024 768 or higher
