The installation of the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) is on the new Microsoft operating system Windows 11 even easier than last the previous Windows 10, wherein the developing the process on a command line command down broke.
The Redmond-based software company has realized that even Linux is no longer something that only friends of the terminal want to set up with cryptic commands. Therefore, the WSL will simply be available as an app in the Microsoft Store in the future. The company has already activated the first preview and its use does not require membership in the company’s insider programs.
The store offer is not a new edition of the WSL. The user gets the current WSL2 here, just like the previous installations. The only difference is the new form of distribution, for which the software was packed in a store container. Everything else remains basically the same. Microsoft has at least added some new features that will soon come in the “normal” WSL: The preview includes support for the Linux kernel 5.10.60.1 and enables easier mounting of VHD files.
According to Microsoft, easier installation is not the only advantage that you get with the innovation. Because the WSL is no longer a system component but has been decoupled from the operating system, it can also receive updates like any other app. Up to now, updates were only played out as part of the larger system updates; security patches, in particular, can now be provided much more flexibly. Given that the WSL is attracting increasing interest as an attack vector against Windows systems, this is also a good thing.
However, the installation process does not take care of itself even via the Microsoft Store. Users must at least ensure that the optional component Virtual Machine Platform is activated. Microsoft shows how this works in the video above: Go to the settings area “Activate / Deactivate Windows Features” and place a tick in front of the point mentioned.
