With a 47% increase in shipments, Huawei moves back into the top five in China’s smartphone market

Recently, Canalys shared the details about the mobile phone market in China. The recent report indicates the figures maintained by different smartphone companies in Q4 2023. Shipments of smartphones reached 73.9 million devices during this time, a mere 1% decrease from the same period last year.

Reportedly, Apple, Honor, Vivo, Huawei, and Xiaomi were the top five brands. A 47% increase in Huawei shipments as compared to the last year was recorded. With this increase, the company once again managed to be a part of the top five brands. In Q4 2023, Apple topped the market with shipments of 17.5 million units. It observed an increase of 6% from the previous year.

The second position was occupied by Honor, with shipments of 11.7 million units and a 16% market share. Vivo occupied the third spot, with shipments of 11.3 million units. Almost 10.4 million units were shipped by Huawei, which resulted in a 47% increase in shipments. Lucas Zhong, a Canalys research analyst, believes that Huawei’s success is due to the Mate 60 Pro. Reportedly, the Mate 60 Pro is powered by a Kirin chipset and features satellite-calling functionality. Xiaomi, on the other hand, shipped 9.5 million units and grabbed the fifth position.

In addition to this, China’s shipments of smartphones decreased by 5% to 273 million units throughout 2023. With a marginal 1% gain in shipments and a 19% market share, Apple reached a significant milestone by topping the annual shipping chart in mainland China for the first time. A 16% market share was held by Vivo, Oppo, and Honor, with respective annual shipments of 44.5 million, 43.9 million, and 43.6 million units, respectively. With a 13% market share, Xiaomi remained in fifth place. Huawei, which ranked sixth, experienced sharp growth in 2023, with a 48% increase in shipments and a surge in market share from 8% in 2022 to 12%.
