With the $125 million deal with Wistron, Tata will become the first Indian company to produce iPhones

For the past few years, Apple has been manufacturing iPhones in India. Notably, the first iPhone manufactured in India was the iPhone SE. It was manufactured by Foxconn back in 2017. Besides Foxconn, Pegatron and Wistron are two other manufacturing partners of the company that assembles iPhones in India.

Recently, we learned that soon Wistron will leave the Indian market. It will no longer deal with the iPhone business in India. Reportedly, the company is selling all of its stakes to Tata Electronics Private Limited (TEPL). Given this, Tata will be India’s first company to produce iPhones.

In India, TEPL is quite famous. This company is a part of the TATA Group and is famous for selling everything from salt to software to even cars. Wistron InfoComm Manufacturing India Private Limited would sell the indirect stake to TATA for a transaction price that is believed to be around $125 million (INR 1,042 crores, or €118 million).

India’s Union Minister of State for Entrepreneurship, Skill Development, Electronics, and Technology, Mr. Rajeev Chandrasekhar, announced on X that Tata will produce iPhones in India for both local and international markets. It was founded in 1868. Reportedly, the company will produce the iPhones at Wistron’s assembly unit in the South Indian state of Karnataka.

Well, this is quite a good approach since it will be quite beneficial for India. It will help strengthen the Indian Prime Minister’s “Make in India” initiative, which is aimed at facilitating global electronics companies to invest in India as a substitute for China. Global companies can benefit from expanding their production bases.
