With the Galaxy S24, Samsung is rumored to introduce two-way satellite connectivity

Last year, it was believed that the South Korean tech firm could debut the Galaxy S23 with support for satellite connectivity. Well, the rumors were incorrect since the Galaxy S23 series doesn’t feature the emergency communication feature like the iPhone 14. As of now, some rumors claim that the company might debut the feature next year on its upcoming Galaxy S24 series.

The local South Korean smartphone companies could introduce a satellite connectivity service next year, claims Lee Jong-ho, Minister of Science and ICT. Since Samsung is the only major smartphone brand in the country it is anticipated that the above-mentioned information refers to Samsung. In the interview, Lee Jong-ho stated: “I cannot say for sure, but I know that the Korean sector plans on commercializing the service next year, anticipating that a standard associated with satellite communication will be established next year.”

The upcoming Galaxy S24 could feature two-way satellite connectivity

The chipset utilized by Samsung in high-end smartphones, i.e., the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, can establish a connection with LEO (Low Earth Orbit) satellites. Such a connection helps establish emergency calling and messaging services. Earlier this year, the company shared that the satellite connectivity ecosystem is not fully prepared. According to reports, Samsung and Iridium Communications are working in partnership to improve the satellite connectivity ecosystem. Iridium Communications has an LEO satellite constellation for emergency communications.

Samsung will debut the Galaxy S24 series, including the Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24+, and Galaxy S24 Ultra, early next year. The company will debut the new series in two different versions, i.e., one accompanying the Exynos 2400 chip and the other the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor. In case the company introduces the satellite connectivity feature on the Galaxy S24, the Exynos 2400 variant will also accompany this feature since the company has already tested it on the Exynos chips. Currently, in the Android category, only smartphones by Huawei have the satellite connectivity feature.
