In recent events at Xiaomi, the company is introducing the kernel source code for the new Redmi Note 10 and Mi 10T Lite/Mi 10i (Gauguin). Previously, the company had published kernel sources for the Redmi Note 10 Pro and Redmi K40 Pro.
For the unaware, kernel sources are one of the foundations of a growing aftermarket community, allowing developers to create enduring custom ROMs, kernels, and more. Every Android smartphone OEM is restricted by the General Public Licence v2 (GPLv2) to candidly roll out the part of the Linux kernel code they sent on their Android devices.
It is said that each OEM has its own way of fulfilling this compulsory task. Some send the sources on the day the smartphone is launched, while others might take weeks or months to do the same task. There are no set rules, but ideally, you want an OEM to roll out the sources within the first few weeks of the launch.
It’s worth mentioning that the Xiaomi Mi 10T Lite / Mi 10i was rolled out with Android 10 out-of-the-box and for which Xiaomi had already released the kernel sources in December last year. On the other hand, the global Mi 10T Lite got the Android 11 update last month, so the company is now following up with an updated kernel source code release for the new Android version.
Users can review the kernel source code at Xiaomi’s GitHub repo and while the Mi 10T Lite / Mi 10i / Redmi Note 9 Pro 5G (China) are all basically the same devices under-the-hood, they share a common source code.
It is also to be noted that Xiaomi has also released the kernel source code for the Redmi Note 10.
